Rachel’s Story

Rachel

When nine year old Rachel started having problems at school, she felt frustrated and angry which had a negative impact on her behaviour and attainment.

Her mother was regularly called into school to discuss her daughter’s behaviour with the teacher.  But, rather than find a way to resolve the problem, the teacher and her mum just clashed. Rachel’s mum felt that the teacher was unfairly targeting her daughter and they failed to find any solutions to the recurring problems.

Rachel’s mother wanted to find a way to help her little girl manage her behaviour and was aware of extra support she could get at the Hanworth Centre.  So she contacted the FunZone project manager who arranged a home visit to find out more about the difficulties Rachel was experiencing.

Rachel and her mum were reassured that they could discuss any problems they had with the Fun Zone staff at the Hanworth Centre. And the project manager arranged a meeting with Rachel’s teacher to give her some useful strategies to enhance Rachel’s behaviour and performance at school.

The great news is that Rachel’s behaviour at school has now significantly improved and she was awarded a gift and a special certificate at the Centre. The relationship between Rachel’s mother and the teacher has also improved meaning that they can go forward and work together to help Rachel progress.

Rachel’s mother has recommended the extra services available at the Hanworth Centre to other parents so that they are aware of what a big difference this support can make to their children’s lives. And Rachel’s mother herself has used some of the additional services on offer, including advice and support with personal issues and CV writing.

Testimonials

3rd May 2022

"My son never finished school, he left with no qualifications, then the pandemic came. He had no support at all. The SE project is the first thing he's ever finished. He got up every day, attended every session and was really motivated. This was the first thing he's ever finished. He has a real sense of achievement. I am so grateful" Parent of young person
