20:20 Youth Vision

14-18 Year olds

HAY are so happy to announce to announce the launch of two new Accredited projects which are funded and supported by Today at Apple. Our close partnership work with Apple allowed us be part of their very successful Made in London programme for two years. Following on from this, we are able to run two projects with the support from them. The projects are:

14 Magazine Placements

A 9 month placement with a poetry magazine; 14 Magazine to learn and experience first hand what the publishing industry is like. Young people will get weekly mentoring from editors on all aspects of creative publishing and be part of this years launch of the magazine. 14 Magazine is part of Vanguard Editions and so there are a large amount of networks available for young people to explore the creative writing and publishing industry further. Experience and skills young people will acquire are:

  • Get a clear understanding of what 14 magazine is and its objectives
  • Support with the development of 14 Magazine
  • Develop ideas for themes for this years edition
  • Learn how to assess and process submissions
  • Learn how to use illustrations within the magazine
  • Review poetry submissions
  • Learn how to do “call outs” for submissions
  • Understand the role of social media in promoting the magazine and gaining interest
  • Create a plan on how they can sell copies and generate interest in the magazine
  • Plan and design social assets / publicity / copy for the magazine
  • Research into other poetry magazines and sharing learning
  • Understanding of platforms like event bright
  • Support the launch of the magazine and the Margate Bookie and the full launch in October
  • Promote “Platform 14” within the magazine to encourage young people to put in submissions – possibly even co-facilitate a workshop to young writers to get their submissions
  • Identify and contact places that can publicize for submissions for 14 magazine as well as platform 14
  • Support any design of publicity
  • Young people to understand what a writing residency is and how they can possibly do one
  • Branding and tech sessions with Apple

Intended outcomes:

  • Increase skills, creativity and critical thinking of young people
  • Increase collaboration between young people and the creative sector for fresh dynamic ideas from excluded young people
  • Increase professional networks of young people
  • Increase confidence and self-esteem of young people
